Theory From the Closet

A punk perspective on tabletop RPG’s, their theory, and design.

Show002: Conflict and Task Resolution

Section 1: Introduction

I introduce myself and give my email address. Then I discuss thee feedback from show 2, which was to fix the glitches and add music. I was able to get the music but am still learning the techniques for recording. I’ve figured out what I need to do to edit post recording, so I don’t need to have the input so loud. I’m going to try backing off the mike a bit. Hopefully the show is understandable.

Section 2: Definitions

  1. Macguffin - A story device used to drag characters along.
  2. Fortune - A resolution system that uses randomness.
  3. Drama - A resolution system where the GM decides what happens.
  4. Karma - A system that compares traits and the highest wins, most notable for this style is the RPG, “Amber.”
  5. Story-neutral - A resolution system that doesn’t consider the story.
  6. Traditional - The games that have come before.
  7. Creator owned - Games owned by their creator.
  8. Untraditional - Games that try different novel ideas.
  9. Credibility/BS rules - Who gets to add fiction to the Shared Imaginary Space is somewhat defined by credibility.

Section 3: Main section

This is where I discuss conflict and tasked based resolution using a somewhat modified example of play from a D+D 3E campaign. It ends with a brief description of reasons I personally think it might be useful to use one resolution type versus another in a game.
