Show011: Social contract
Not a lot to say right now. I need to take a nap. I’ll spruce this post up after Origins. That means Monday.

If I had established a “Guy’s Night Out” with some close friends, where we drank and shot pool and smoked cigs and were fucking macho and retarded, I would be totally pissed if someone started bringing their girlfriend along. Clearly, game night (or more specifically, Rifts Night @ Chad’s… shudder…) is loaded with many of those same understood and unspoken rules.
Granted, an Open game night, like what Tim does on Fridays, works best as an open to the public thing, working almost as a forum, with new games, new faces, new ideas. But clearly, that’s what Social Contract is about… defining explicitly when it’s BYOB-Tell-Your-Friends, and when to leave the fucking girlfriend home.
I really enjoyed this episode. I’ve been playing for a great many years but had never really considered social contracts. Nor has any group I have been a part of ever really descussed them beforehand. Definitly food for thought and thats why I listen to your podcast.
Hey Jeremy,
Glad it was helpful. I think a lot of people don’t give Social Contract much consideration and assume everyone wants what they want. I really think this ambiguity is a good part of what leads to problems folks have.
