Just in case someone is still interested in the subject and unawares, the Harping Monkey group is playtesting Giants, and their podcasted sessions include map creation as well.

No worries, Jeff, thanks for taking the time to answer in the first place.

I must admit I was mainly interested in some understanding of the structure of the map creation. but if you want to keep it under wraps, that's cool.

Hey Mikael,

Sorry about taking so long to reply, been busy as of late. And now on with your question.

The map making part of the game has been one of the most reliably fun aspects of the game thus far. I'm not saying that the rest of the game isn't, just that this part has worked very well from the start.

There is a structure to the map making process, and I personally feel that is a strong part of why it works so well.

I hope that helps, obviously the book goes through the steps and is much more detailed.

I have heard people describe Giants as a unique game that has some Board Game aspects too it. I hope it's unique, at least that was my intent when I created it.

Hey Paul,

I hear you, and thanks-- a lot. I gave a lot of consideration to making the change. One, it's easier for me to make licensing decisions since I made the new intro music. Two, there were people who thought they were getting bait and switched into listening to something other than advertised. Three it's been used for going on a year, so I was ready for a change. The last reason is the intro music is the only negative comment that I come across on the internet, about my show. The last reason is the smallest concern, but I'd be a liar to try to pretend it had nothing to do with the change. Hopefully now complaints will target something more interesting, music is pretty low hanging fruit.

If you want to talk further can you get me via facebook, or my email address? I can't remember if we've talked via email so that can be found by sending something to gmail via my site name theoryfromthecloset. I'm not opposed to having more of a conversation about this but I'd like to let Paul and Mikael get a conclusion on their discussion without too much crosstalk.

The day the music died... ;)

Please bring it back - I loved it. It was in stark contrast to your laid-back tones and the two worked really well together. Sure not everyone is going to like whatever you do, but here's a vote for your original signature tune.

Having written that, I realized that you do not have to have a special kind of map-making at the start of the game to call it innovative. Just having a map-making phase is innovative, even if it seems like such an obvious thing.

Or perhaps I am not up to speed on my games. Is Giants really unique roleplaying game in this aspect?

Thanks Jeff!

How do you create the awesome maps you mentioned in the interview? I got the impression that the map-creating part has been a reliable hit in every one of your games, and I was wondering how you made that happen. Is it just that people or at least gamers inherently like drawing maps, and all you need to do is to tell them to draw this community or that Giant's lair or whatever? Or is there more structure, something that makes it reliable fun? If the latter, what can you tell us about it?

Hey Mikael,

Sorry about the lack of info in the interview. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about the map, or the game in general.

Hi Mikael,

I think you are right that I could have pried deeper about the map. Don't be annoyed though, I'll get Jeff over here to answer your question. How's that for service?

Yeah, the music is definitely easier on the average ears, while maintaining a healthy level of weirdness.

As for the interview, I hoped that you would make Jeff say what exactly is so cool about the map-making, some indication about how it's actually done. Now I was left with all the peripheral info about its coolness and how innovative it is, but no real information. Could be a marketing tactic, but I guess I am so used to the openness of indie designers that this made me perhaps more annoyed than eager to buy the game.
